TheN52 is actually more advance than the N54. The N52 is an aluminium-magnesium block with VANOS while the N54 is based of an older engine design. The multiple upgrades were designed into the N54 to make up for the increased stress, power and heat. It is a good engine but it is based on older tech compared to the N52.
